Dear northern musicians part 1

Somebody asked a question few years  ago and said, are there serious musicians I the north?
I stood for a while and couldn’t answer the question. He further more said if there are, then who do they sing to or for? I summoned courage and said there’re so many gospel acts in the north. Not just artiste but talented ones and I named the big A-list northern gospel act Then he said, I’ll love to have their songs , where can i download them ? I search the internet I could barely find them. I felt ashamed of myself
because we find putting songs on the internet a waste.

Dear northern (arewa) gospel musicians,
It’s time to wake up. We’ve been sleeping for too long.
It’s time to bring out the gospel out of the box.
Your music is not for the north alone, your ministry is for the world , stand up you have all it takes to make a difference. Good gospel music isn’t made for the south west or east alone, AREWA you can do it!

How do we do it...?
1.        Improve your writing and composition skills. Stop singing other people’s songs as yours. Be original be creative.
2.        improve your production quality and singing ability
3.       It’s high time you discover yourself to know if truly you are called by music. Cos I’ve listened to a couple of albums and instantly ask myself if this people know what they are doing. One fact to note is that not everyone was born to be a musician or a singer. So please if singing isn’t working for you go look for your calling.
4.       Promotion. You doing music without promotion is like sinking water into basket. the sole aim of music is sending message to people and if you are not promoting your songs how do your message get across to people?. The word promotion may sound strange to you but I’ll explain in simple terms.
Promotion is creating awareness for your music via different channels e.g. internet, tv, radio stations, billboards and news papers. You may not have the strength to go through all of them now, so you choose the most affordable for now….and internet is basically the most affordable.  Kudos to some of our northern musicians who have stepped out and doing it right. Like….solomon lange, jeremiah gyang, morgan azi and few others.

Over the years we have so limited ourselves to producing and lunching in our various churches and after that we think we are done. Sometimes people who care a bit will look for a marketer or a distributor that’s all. That’s a big NO! You need to promote your song cos not everyone goes to a music store to buy music. Technology advancement has made things much easier for us, so why waste time. Although I know music promotion cost a fortune but at the long run you’ll be glad you did it.
So If you don’t have a song on the internet as a musician or an artiste I advice you get a means for that.

Well, let me stop here for now…. will be back later.

Up arewa music!!! See you at the top!
